Where to dispose of furniture in San Diego

Couches, dressers, and tables do not belong in City bins. Reuse through WasteFreeSD when the piece still has life. Trash it at Miramar as general refuse only if it is truly junk — or book furniture removal.

Furniture disposal

Donate first · Then recycle or haul

Reviewed September 21, 2026 against City and County sources. Confirm hours before you drive.

  1. 1If the piece is usable, search WasteFreeSD.org for donation or reuse before you dump it.
  2. 2Do not place furniture in or beside City trash, recycling, or organics bins on a regular collection day.
  3. 3Broken furniture can go to Miramar Landfill as general refuse (covered load, posted vehicle fee). It is not a bulky-item City pickup.
  4. 4If you cannot haul a sofa or bedroom set, text Fred a photo. Curbside furniture starts at $69; sectionals are priced by the piece.

City bins will not take a couch

The City’s What Goes Where guidance puts furniture, appliances, and mattresses in a bulky-item category: too large for a regular recycle or trash bin. Collection rules also ban furniture, appliances, auto parts, and items over 50 pounds from every household container. Setting a sofa on the parkway “for trash day” is illegal dumping. Use Get It Done to report dumped furniture, not to request a secret pickup — the City does not currently run a routine bulky curbside program.

Unincorporated San Diego County is different: franchise haulers offer two free bulky-item pickups per year for single-family customers, up to three items, and furniture (chairs, sofas, carpet, similar pieces) is on that list. Other cities (Chula Vista, National City, La Mesa, Santee) use their own franchise rules. Read the hauler flyer on your bill.

Donate, landfill, or hire a truck

WasteFreeSD is the county’s official directory for repair, donation, and bulky-item outlets. A clean dresser or working reclining chair often has a second home. Soiled, broken, or bedbug-infested furniture should not go to a thrift floor — that becomes someone else’s dumping problem.

True junk furniture can be self-hauled to Miramar Landfill, 5180 Convoy Street, Monday–Saturday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cars, pickups, and small trailers pay flat-rate refuse fees that depend on vehicle type and whether the waste was generated in the City. All loads must be covered ($50 uncovered-load fee). Mix in a TV or fridge and you will be turned around — those items have to come out before the trash deck.

Fred’s furniture removal is the middle path: we donate when a piece can be reused, recycle metal, and landfill the rest. A single couch, dresser, or table is $69 curbside. Two-piece sectionals start at $119. Full-service carries from inside. Text a photo so we quote item rates instead of a whole truck if you only have a few pieces.

Furniture disposal questions

Will the City pick up my couch if I leave it at the curb?
Not on a regular trash route. City of San Diego has no routine bulky pickup today (a program is planned for 2027). Unincorporated customers should ask their franchise hauler about two free bulky pickups a year.
Can I donate a stained sofa?
Usually no. Donation outlets need clean, usable furniture. Broken or infested pieces should be hauled as junk.
What does Fred charge to take furniture?
From $69 curbside for a single piece such as a couch, dresser, or table. Sectionals are per piece. The quote from a photo is the amount you pay.
